Formerly located on the third floor of what was then South Park High School, Lamar University has been a mainstay in the city of Beaumont since 1923. Beginning as South Park Junior College its enrollment started to outgrow its size and by 1942 the university had moved to a new facility with a new name, Lamar College. Enrollment has continued to increase every year since its inception. It wasn't until 1971, one year after Lamar began offering its first doctoral program, that the current name Lamar University became official.
With the city of Beaumont less than an hour away from Houston, students flock to Lamar University every school year in search of a quality education and cheap apartment living not too far away from home. Recent improvements to the campus have attracted even more students to the university such as the renovation of the northern part of the campus as well as the replacement of its residence hall Cardinal Village which now has been expanded and has three separate sections.
With five colleges to choose from students have many options when it comes to picking an educational track that's just right for them. Those colleges include, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Fine Arts & Communication, College of Business, College of Education & Human Development and College of Engineering. The school also offers 33 masters degrees ranging from Master of Arts in English to Master of Science in Applied Criminology. With only one doctorate program in 1970 the school now offers 5 doctorate programs which include, Doctor of Deaf Education, Doctor of Education in Education Leadership, Doctor of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering.
There is no on-campus residency requirement at Lamar University, so the opportunity to live in an awesome Lamar University area apartment is there no matter what year you are as a student.
If you just must live on campus there are the newly renovated Cardinal Village On-Campus Apartments that feature apartment style living equipped with mini-refrigerator, microwave, computer desk, telephone outlets, basic cable and internet access. Other amenities include community centers, study areas, meeting rooms, fitness centers, swimming pools, on-site laundry, basketball and volleyball courts. I believe Wayne and Garth would say "Game on"! As mentioned earlier there is now a Cardinal Village II and III to withstand the increasing student population and provide housing for all those that request it.

Even with the renovations and the new editions, most students still feel the need to venture off and find their own apartment supplied with the amenities to fit their specific needs. The city of Beaumont is an excellent place to find the apartment you've been looking for with magnificent apartment locations throughout the city. Many students even find their own East Houston Apartment to be in good distance from the university as well.
For a quality education minutes away from a great apartment, a fun environment that is close to home and the best college experience money can buy, make sure that Lamar University is at the top of your list.
